Keeping your Windows looking good
The framing and ledges around your windows can be subjected to a lot of wear and tear with children, pets, what’s in the environment, and especially in this part of the world, extreme weather outside and the consequent rhythm of heating and cooling inside. Keeping your windows properly maintained will help ensure energy efficiency in addition to keeping your home looking nice. Also, timely window maintenance can avoid early and costly replacement costs and potential damage to adjoining building infrastructure.
The following are typical and sensible steps that can be followed to ensure the health and longevity of your windows:
Cleaning – Clean windows once or twice a year inside and outside. Mixing a bit of liquid detergent in hot water works good as does standard window cleaner if that is what you have. At the same time, wipe down and clean the window ledges and frames. If you need to use a ladder, follow safe work practices! For slide in windows a vacuum with a crevice tool attachment might be helpful to clean out the window ledges of debris, etc. before wiping down.
Re-caulking – If the caulking is cracked, or if pieces of caulking are missing, apply a fresh layer of caulking; check with your hardware or paint store for the right brand if you have questions. Check your windows for re-caulking yearly or every two years, to stay on top of it.
Repainting – Keep the paint on window ledges and frames in good condition to protect the total window installation from premature failure and damage. A rule of thumb is to check for areas that might need repainting every two years. Fiberglass and metal frames can be buffed to add look and protection.
Sealing – to help maintain an even temperature indoors seal gaps around windows and doors with weather stripping. Also check to see if any rubber seals on sliding or opening windows need to be replaced to ensure tight closing.
